The first thing a good Sarasota ant control visit produces isn’t a cloud of spray — it’s an answer. What species is this. Because ghost ants, carpenter ants, sugar ants, and pharaoh ants all respond to different baits, and the wrong one either does nothing or makes the problem worse.
Ghost ants sprayed with a repellent will bud into four colonies. Pharaoh ants sprayed with most consumer products will scatter across the house. Carpenter ants baited with a sugar bait will walk past it — they want protein most of the year. Every Sarasota ant call we run starts with identification.
Ghost ants. Tiny, pale, nearly translucent abdomens. They trail along plumbing lines, backsplashes, and kitchen counters. Most common call from Arlington Park, Gulf Gate, Palmer Ranch, and condo units across Siesta Key and Longboat. They love moisture and sugar and they move through wall voids to get to both.
Carpenter ants. Big, black, 1/4 to 1/2 inch. They signal a moisture problem in wood — old roof leaks, window-frame rot, damaged siding. Ringling-era homes, Laurel Park bungalows, and Siesta Key coastal stock are the usual suspects. They don’t eat the wood; they hollow it out to build galleries.
Sugar ants / odorous house ants. Slightly larger than ghosts, darker. Smell like rotten coconut when crushed. Pantries, kitchen corners, and along baseboards. Very common in newer Palmer Ranch and east-Sarasota builds.
Acrobat ants. Two-tone brown-and-black, lift their abdomen when disturbed. Nest in tree stumps, firewood, and sometimes in eaves and soffit voids.
Big-headed ants. Common in fresh landscaping and along foundation perimeters. Tend to displace other ant species once established.
Bait first, spray second. The bait goes where the foraging ants pick it up — along trails, near harborage points, inside tamper-resistant stations where needed. Workers carry it back to the queen, the colony dies off over 5 to 14 days depending on species.

For carpenter ants we locate the galleries — usually by tapping wood, checking window and door frames for sawdust-like frass, and tracing worker trails after dark. Treatment addresses the colony and we flag the moisture source for repair.
